Hearing Aids for Military Veterans in the UK
Can Veterans Get Free Hearing Aids on the NHS?
Yes. All UK veterans are entitled to free hearing aids through the NHS. Your GP can refer you to an NHS audiology department for assessment and fitting. NHS hearing aids are typically behind-the-ear (BTE) digital aids. While functional, they may lack some of the advanced features available in private hearing aids, such as Bluetooth streaming, rechargeable batteries, or sophisticated noise filtering.
What Private Hearing Aids Are Available?
Private hearing aids offer a wider range of technology levels, styles, and features. Options include:
• Invisible-in-canal (IIC) aids — extremely discreet • Receiver-in-canal (RIC) aids — popular for comfort and sound quality • Behind-the-ear (BTE) aids — powerful and versatile • Bluetooth-enabled aids that stream phone calls, music, and TV directly • Rechargeable models eliminating battery changes • Aids with built-in tinnitus masking features
Private hearing aids typically cost between £1,500 and £6,000 per pair, depending on technology level.
Can I Claim Hearing Aid Costs in My Compensation Claim?
Yes. If you are making a civil negligence claim against the MOD, the cost of hearing aids — including future replacements every 3–5 years — can be claimed as special damages. This applies to private hearing aids where they provide a clinical benefit over NHS alternatives. Your solicitor will include an itemised schedule of hearing aid costs in your claim.
What About Hearing Aid Maintenance and Batteries?
Ongoing costs of hearing aid use can also be included in a compensation claim. This covers battery replacements (for non-rechargeable aids), annual servicing, ear mould replacements, and eventual replacement of the aids themselves. A lifetime cost projection is prepared as part of the special damages schedule.
What Support Is Available Through Military Charities?
Several military charities and organisations can help veterans access hearing care. The Royal British Legion, SSAFA, Help for Heroes, and Blind Veterans UK (which also supports hearing loss) all offer support. Some provide grants towards private hearing aids or assistive listening devices. These services are independent of any compensation claim.
